What's the difference between cobblestone paving and setts?
Whether you're a homeowner looking to transform your outdoor space, a landscaper or a local authority paving a public space, understanding the difference helps you choose the right product for the job.
Cobbles are naturally rounded stones, traditionally gathered from riverbeds or beaches. Their irregular shape gives a characterful, heritage appearance ideal for decorative features.
Setts, by contrast, are quarried and cut to a more uniform, block-like shape. Easier to lay in precise patterns, they're better suited to driveways, pathways, mowing edges and modern applications where a cleaner finish is required.
Materials, sizes & finishes
Available in limestone, sandstone and granite alternatives, each in a variety of colours and textures to suit both contemporary and traditional designs; the compact dimensions of our cobble setts make them ideal for intricate, multi-coloured patterns.
Standard sizes include 100×100mm, 200×100mm and 300×150mm, in thicknesses of 40–60mm - bespoke cuts are also available. Finishes include sawn, flamed, riven, hand-cut and tumbled.
Tumbled setts feature a naturally textured surface and a softer, aged appearance perfect for heritage and rustic settings. For a beautiful finish to your outdoor paving designs, stone cobble setts are also ideal for fine detailing and edging.

Installation & maintenance
Stone setts must be laid on a solid, well-prepared base, typically a concrete or compacted hardcore sub-base and jointed with mortar or flexible grout for stability.
Once laid, maintenance is straightforward: a regular brush or hose-down removes debris, occasional weed control is recommended, and it is advisable to check periodically that the jointing material has remained intact.
